Introduction to the Life of Maci

Twenty-two years ago at the end of June, I was born in Wichita, Kansas. I was lucky enough to grow up down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, which meant that I got a front row seat to several weather events like blizzards, floods, and severe storms, which piqued my interest in meteorology from a young age. In 2011, my family and I moved to a small town north of Tulsa, Oklahoma and I eventually graduated from high school there. After graduation, I decided to attend a university in Tulsa where I was a biology/pre-med student and I realized rather quickly that pursuing that career was not what I wanted to do. So instead, I transferred to OU in 2017 to chase after my dream of being a meteorologist and now I am set to graduate in two semesters!

Tulsa/Owasso/Claremore tornado on March 30, 2016.

Nowadays, I enjoy all things weather-related, I still love nature and the outdoors, and a fun fact about me is that I can play almost every song on Guitar Hero on expert! I listen to just about any genre of music, but my favorite artists are Kenny Chesney, Post Malone, and The 1975. I'm not a huge movie-watcher, but I thoroughly enjoy comedy shows and reality television (Parks & Rec, The Office, Big Brother, etc.). A hobby that I just got into within the last year is gardening, and my favorite plant at the moment is Fittonia vershaffetii, or the Nerve plant. I love the bright white veins throughout the leaves and how small/compact or big/bushy they can be!

My hope for the future is to settle somewhere in Oklahoma or Texas and continue doing research with radar (my favorite part about meteorology!) and improve on ways to warn the public about severe weather such as hail, flooding, and tornadoes.

  1. Hello Maci, I believe that your choice of degree fits perfectly with the state of Oklahoma. If one is a fan of a variety of different temperatures and weather events Oklahoma is the place to be. I have never lived in a state that has such drastic changes in temperature in such a short period of time! I’m glad you found your passion and are pursuing it! I think you also have interesting hobbies, especially gardening!

  2. Hi Maci!

I'm a pre-med/biochem major, so I can definitely understand why you switched from it! What Univeristy in Tulsa did you go to? I'm only asking because my sister just got to TU and is absolutely loving it! Weather has always been on my bad side, especially living in Oklahoma, dealing with the tornadoes every year - props to you for being so interested in it! Gardening is also such a great hobby to have - it's not only relaxing but makes your home look beautiful! I can't wait to see what you write for the rest of the semester!

  3. Hey Maci! I enjoyed reading your introduction post. I'm a journalism major, and I have a few friends that are meteorology majors as well! You definitely picked the right place to major in something like that. I used to be pretty good at Guitar Hero, but I also haven't played in about 6 years so I think I might have to pick it back up. I'm also a huge fan of The Office. I've probably seen the show six or seven times through because my friends and I always just put it on whenever we're hanging out. Looking forward to reading more of your posts this semester!

  4. Hi Maci! It is so great that we have people like you who are interested in weather. I also love the outdoors and nature, so I really do depend on meteorologists to make sure I'll be safe before I go hiking and adventuring. I'm glad you found your path in life because I know how hard that can be to achieve. Also, I love gardening but do not have a green thumb at all. I've killed all 10 plants I've ever owned...so I really admire people who can help plants thrive. Anyways, hope you enjoy the course!

  5. Hey Maci!

I love that you have used your interests and turned them into a career passion. I have always loved weather as well. I took a meteorology class here and thought it was fascinating! I love Big Brother as well, it has always been one of my favorites. I don't watch a lot of movies either, and people always think I am so strange for it so I am glad to find someone I can relate to. Nice to meet you!

  6. Yay for meteorology, Maci! My husband taught in the School of Meteorology at OU (that's how we met); he's retired now, but he's still a total weather nerd with a gazillion radar apps on his phone, getting all excited when there's weather going on somewhere... and there's pretty much ALWAYS weather going on somewhere! I am really glad you have found a project for this class that connects up with your meteorology world. Meteorology is one of the very best programs at OU, and now everybody in class will get to benefit from what you share with us about the science behind the storms. Bring on the thunder and lightning! :-)

  7. Hello!
I absolutely LOVE watching the Office! I have seen the whole thing through about two or three times now, it is for sure one of my favorites! Also, I love storms and weather-related incidents, so I think meteorology is such a cool major! I have also heard that meteorology is quite a hard major, so congratulations on graduating in two semesters!

  8. Hi Maci! That is awesome how you pursued your interests and came to OU for meteorology! I always knew OU had a great program in meteorology! I also love watching the Office and I am sad that it will be leaving Netflix in 2021! I guess we will just have to try watching all we can before it goes away. I also like listening to Post Malone and I hear he is coming to OKC in November!

  9. Hey Maci! I think it's so cool that you've decided to pursue your passion of becoming a meteorologist in the future! Oklahoma (and OU specifically) is definitely the best place to do that. I've heard so many great things about our meteorology program-- plus, the National Weather Center is right here in Norman. I bet you'll get to do so many cool things with that job. I'm excited to read more of your posts this semester!

  10. Hi Maci,

Congratulations on being a Senior! That's pretty cool that you're a meteorology major. Severe weather and trying to predict it fascinates me as well but I chose Computer Science instead. Have you done any storm chasing? I really want to chase a tornado one day. What kind of job are you trying to get with the degree? Anyway good luck this semester. Maybe I'll see you on TV one day!

  11. Hi Maci!

Meteorology is a really cool program, and I am glad you find a lot of joy in it! It makes me sad that you're not a big movie watcher, because that is one of my favorite things to do, but I can forgive you this time! Good luck on your senior year, and I wish you the best going forward!

It is so cool that you are pursuing a lifelong passion. That picture is so cool! The Office is brilliant, I watch it whenever I get bored, maybe I should give Parks & Rec a try. I have never been able to keep plants alive, so I admire anyone who can!
It was lovely to meet you, I can't wait to read your work.

  14. Hi Maci!

It's awesome how interested in weather you are! I grew up in Oklahoma my whole life, and tornadoes still scare me... but that's so cool how you turned your love for weather into a career path. I love comedy TV shows as well. The Office is the best! I'm currently re-watching it for about the fourth or fifth time, and Jim's pranks on Dwight never get old!
